Summary of MonTel Installation activities

GENERAL INFORMATION

(FIND OUT THE FOLLOWING - and send to: support@netwiz.com.au )

  1. Name of client to appear on license
  2. Location of Client by suburb
  3. Number of Users/Extensions
  4. Type of Network.
  5. Type of client PC's (Windows 95).
  6. Type of Accounting System (or Monitor Link).
  7. Vendor, Make, model and version of the PABX.
  8. Collect any other information about the PABX (from the vendor)

PRE-INSTALL MONTEL SERVER

  1. Make sure details above are collected. (Especially we Need to know what type of PABX.)
  2. Make sure it has an SMDR port (and what is the Baud Rate, Data Bits, Stops Bits, Parity and Hand-shaking).
  3. A dedicated PC connected to the network near the PABX to run the MonTel Server. This can be a 286 or later, providing there is at least 525K free after network drivers are loaded (i.e. any old (working) boat anchor!).
  4. A serial cable connected the SMDR port to the PC.
  5. Network drivers loaded on the PC, and it is connected to the network.
  6. A login on the network for MonTel.
  7. Copy the pre-inst files to a local direcoty on the MonTel Server PC, creating say a C:\MONTEL and C:\MONTEL\DATA directory.
  8. Set up a PABX.INI file with license, directories and basic details - and Serial Port settings for this folder.
  9. Restart Term until you are seeing data from the PABX. Use the PABX.INI to change settings.
  10. Run PABXAQ to capture sample data for the driver.
  11. Send sample to Netwiz to debug driver (if required).
  12. Note the Serial Port settings for use when installing the MonTel Server to the Network.

PRE-INSTALL FOR MONTEL IMPORT EXPORT FROM ACCOUNTING SYSTEM

For the import we need to have sample reports of the following:

  1. A report of Employees and Employee codes
  2. Same for Disbursements.
  3. A client report, preferably giving maximum information, especially phone numbers (including address etc).
  4. A matter report linking clients to matters. Matters might be project codes or job numbers.
  5. Optionally a report for Activities and activity codes.
  6. Optionally a report for contacts.

INSTALL MONTEL CLIENT-SET-UP AND SERVER.

Note that, MonTel privacy and security depend on the network. Please follow this structure where you can.

Note also, that the MonTel Server is a DOS program, and therefore MUST HAVE DOS Path names, that is a Drive, and a short path name using no more than 8 legal characters per directory. Because of this limitation the MonTel client is ONLY tested with short path names, and while it will (probably) work with long path names (in places not used by the MonTel Server) long path names are un-tested and unsupported in MonTel.

  1. Decide on directory structure.

    Recommended:

    APPS/MonTel/

    DATA/MonTel/Main

    DATA/MonTel/ClientDB

    USERS/MonTel

APPS is area on the server where the administrator prefers well behaved network applications to reside. This is call the MonTel Application Directory.

DATA is the data area for well behaved application (make sure there is at least 100Mb free). This is called the MonTel Data Directory.

USERS is the area where the users individual folders are. MonTel Server should have it's own, and needs to read and write to all the users directories. This is called the Users Directory, or sometimes the Root of the User's Folders.

See: Directory structure and Permissions on a Novell Netware Network Or Directory structure and Permissions on a Microsoft NT Network.

  2. Make sure that you have the relevant permissions on the Network to be able to create and install files.
  3. Download the MonTel ZIP files from the network, making sure that you have the relevant files (including the SETn.ZIP files for MDAC, and the MSDE files if required).
  4. Run the setup Wizard (montel_2_12_xx.exe). See Using SetupMT on a NEW MonTel installation.
  5. Install the MonTel services. See Installation of the MonTel Server and Central components.
  6. Use EDINI32 to modify the PABX.INI file with all of the settings. See How to set users up manually.
  7. Check network security:

Make sure users can't write to DATA/MonTel/Main (unless they are Admin).

Make sure users can't write to APPS/MonTel/Main (unless they are Admin).

Make sure users CAN read APPS/MonTel/Main

Make sure users CAN read and write to DATA/MonTel/ClientDB. (This is no longer vital when using the SQL Version - however the MonTel Administrator will need write permission.)

  8. Disconnect serial port.
  9. Edit sample batch file (in APPS/MonTel/Support) MonTel.bat to set up server. See: How to make the MonTel Server automatically re-start after a PABX.INI file update.
  10. Test MonTel server, checking that all the directories can be read and written too. See APPS/MonTel/Main/pabxerr.log for a list of errors. See How to configure Win9x computers for maximum conventional memory for running MonTel Server in pure DOS. If need to, see also: How to run MonTel Server in a DOS Box or VM in Windows
  11. When working, reconnect and check that call records are being generated. Check that the pricing model is correct. See How to charge for Timed Local Calls and How get rid of digits that the phone system prefixed to the number dialled..
  12. Note you will get errors unless all the users are correct in the PABX.INI file.

MONTEL CLIENT.

  1. Make sure that the server is working and the PABX.INI file is correct, including user information. Check especially that you are going to set up the database with the correct format for the accounting system or disbursement control system for the firm. See How to configure key fields for call record updates.
  2. Login to a windows computer a the user who has "AdministratorOn" in the PABX.INI file.
  3. Check that SQL Server and of MSDE Are set up correctly for MonTel and you have all the relevant information. See: How to set up MSDE to run MonTel on your network.
  4. Run setup.exe from the Setup32 folder in the MonTel Application Directory (APPS/MonTel/setup32). See How to change default set up options in Setup32 (Version 2.9 onwards).
  5. Now run MonTel for the first time. Review: How to prepare MS SQL Server for MonTel and other SQL Server issues.
  6. It will invite you to create the Master Client Database for the first time. See How to update or set up MonTel to use SQL Master Client Database.
  7. MonTel will then create the Local Client Database (see How is the Local Client database named and other issues), and finally ask you to add your details to the employee database. To avoid this step for all users see: How to add new users to MonTel so that you don't need to edit the client database.
  8. Test and configure MonTel to get the settings you want. See Background Options and Network Options.
  9. Configure and test IMPORT32.EXE import client/matter and employee details (or add employees manually). See How to use MONIMP to import automatically overnight from accounting systems.
  10. Configure and test MONIMP32.EXE to export disbursement records. See How to use MONEX32.
  11. Modify of the settings including security parameters. See How to set the pop-up to pop-up when you want it to (pop-up threshold) and other security issues.
  12. If you have changed in local background settings in MonTel, then remember to save MonTel.INI in the local windows directory as DEFAULTS.INI in the Master Client Database. See: How to force local default or background options in the MonTel Client.
  13. Install and test the MonTel Client. (Check that the calls pop-up). See How to set up the MonTel 32 bit Client on each computer.
